William Forgan Smith (1887-1953), was Premier of Queensland from 1932 to 1942. His name Forgan was his mother's maiden name.
He was born in Scotland where he began as a painter and decorator in Glasgow. He arrived in Queensland in 1912.
He entered parliament in 1915 representing the Labor Party as member for Mackay.
Mackay is the centre of the sugar industry in Queensland and this was always a major priority for Forgan Smith. After he resigned as premier he became chairman of the Sugar Board.
