SS-Brigadeführer Wilhelm Mohnke (March 15, 1911 - Present) was one of Hitler's last remaining generals. During the Battle of Berlin he commanded a Kampfgruppe charged with defending the Berlin government area, including the Reichstag, nicknamed "The Citadel".
Mohnke is thought to take part of the responsibility for the Malmedy Massacre . He is said to be responsible for the execution of 35 Canadian Prisoners of War while attached to the 12.SS Hitlerjugend division at Fountenay-le-Pesnel .
During Wacht am Rhine , Mohnke served as an SS-Standartenführer in the 1.SS-Panzerdivision Liebstandarte Adolf Hitler division. On January 30, 1945 Wilhelm Mohnke was promoted to SS-Brigadeführer , but suffered ear damage from an air raid. When Mohnke recovered, he was appointed the head of Kampfgruppe Mohnke , a Kampfgruppe of 9 battalions charged with the defense of the Reichstag and Berlin government quarter.
While leading a group of survivors from the Reichs Chancellory Bunker, Mohnke was captured by Soviet forces. He was held in solitary confinement for four years. He was released from captivity on October 10, 1955 and lives today in Barsbuttel , Germany.
