Wasfi al-Tal (also Wasfi Tel) was Prime Minister of Jordan for several terms.
Al-Tal was Prime Minister and Defense Minister during the Black September incident in 1970, and drew the particular ire of Palestinian leaders for what they felt was the brutality of his policies during and after those events.
On November 28 1971, while attending an Arab League summit, al-Tal was shot dead. Four gunmen belonging to the Palestinian Black September group approached al-Tal on the steps of the Cairo Sheraton hotel and shot him. Newspapers at the time reported that, while al-Tal lay dying, one of the gunmen knelt and lapped al-Tal's blood from the steps [1]. Another newspaper reported Wasfi al-Tal's last words were "Theyve killed me. Murderers, they believe only in fire and destruction." This was the first assassination conducted by the group.
