Walter Lord (October 8 1917-19 May 2002) was an American author, best known for his documentary-style novel A Night To Remember, about the sinking of the RMS Titanic.

Lord was born in Baltimore, Maryland, graduated from Princeton University in 1939 and joined the Office of Strategic Services in London in 1942. He was the agency's secretariat when the war ended in 1945.

While Lord wrote a dozen successful books on such subjects as Pearl Harbor, the Battle of Midway, the Alamo, polar exploration and the civil rights struggle, he was best known for the 1955 book on the Titanic A Night to Remember, which was made into a movie. He also wrote another book about Titanic called the Night Lives on: The Untold Stories & Secrets Behind the Sinking of the Unsinkable Ship-Titanic.
