Vucedol culture

(Redirected from Vucedol)

Vučedol Culture (near Vukovar, Croatia)

Following the Baden culture , another wave of Indo-European people came to the banks of the River Danube, one of the major places they occupied around the year 3000 BC (eneolithic) is known today as Vucedol (Wolf's Valley). Their ceramic pottery became famous worldwide. One of the most famous pieces is the ritual vessel called the Vucedol Dove (vučedolska golubica) and the oldest European calendar, Orion shown on a vessel found in a nearby town Vinkovci. The houses found on Vucedol site were places of birth and burial. Number of skeletons were found in the pits, once serving as food storages. Their bodies were placed in a ritual way, with some indications of possible human sacrifice.
