Uta Hagen

Uta Hagen (12 June 1919 - 14 January 2004) was an American stage actress and acting teacher.

She was born in Göttingen in Germany and raised in Madison, Wisconsin. She studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts.

She was primarily noted for stage roles. Because of blacklisting, she had more limited output in film, not making her cinematic debut until 1972. She married José Ferrer in 1938; they divorced in 1948. They had one daughter. She taught at HB Studios , a well-known New York City acting school, starting in 1957, and married its co-founder, Herbert Berghof , on 25 January 1957. After his death in 1990 she became the school's chairman.

Mrs. Hagen has been the single most influential acting teacher in American history. Her past students have been Matthew Broderick, Christine Lahti, Jason Robards, Sigourney Weaver, Whoopi Goldberg, Jack Lemmon, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Benicio Del Toro to name a few.
