Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS

UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, is a United Nations programme designed to coordinate the worldwide response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. It was founded out of the World Health Organization's Global Programme on HIV/AIDS in 1996.

Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, its first and current executive director is Dr. Peter Piot, Under-Secretary General of the United Nations.

Funded by donations from UN member states, UNAIDS is supported in its mission by ten cosponsors: UNHCR, UNICEF, UNDP, UNFPA, UNODC, ILO, UNESCO, WFP, WHO, and the World Bank.

UNAIDS coordinates with the following UN specialized agencies in its activities against AIDS: World Bank, UNICEF, UNFPA, UNODC, UNESCO, WHO, WFP, UNDP

UNAIDS is a large supporter of the International AIDS Conference (the 15th International AIDS Conference was held from July 11.-16. 2004 in Bangkok/Thailand) and biannually publishes the Global Report on the HIV/AIDS Epidemic.
