Trapani

Trapani is the name of a city in the western part of the Italian island of Sicily, of 68,346 inhabitants (2001). It is the capital of the province of Trapani.

The ancient name of Trapani was Drepanon , (Gk., "sickle"); on the western corner of Sicily. Trapani's harbor curves out into the Mediterranean Sea in the shape of a sickle.

Trapani has had problems in recent years as a center for drug-trafficking, as the major port on the western end of the island.

Over the centuries the salt-pans and the salt industries have created a unique environment of great cultural and economic relevance. This route is called Via del sale (the salt road). On this road there are several mills.
