Appearance

They come in two coat types referred to as the long-coated Mi-Ki and the smooth-coated (a shorter coated dog, with no mustache or beard).

Temperament

It is a small, devoted companion, who is outgoing, fun loving, and intelligent. They share common ancestors with the Papillon, Maltese, and the Japanese Chin.

History

In 1992 Mrs. Hall, a retired United Kennel Club judge, discovered the breed, purchased her first Mi-Ki, and started the first stud books for the breed. Those stud books are still maintained by Mrs. Hall today. The first club formed in the United States was The Greater American Toy Mi-Ki Club, which was later incorporated in the state of Wisconsin in 1994. That club is no longer active, but a new club, The Mi-Ki Club of America, was immediately formed. The Mi-Ki Club of America has received recognition for the dogs in their stud books in 17 countries around the world. The first Multi-International Mi-Ki Champion was exported to Germany in 2004 and was the first Mi-Ki to be registered there.

Other clubs have formed, but some breeders have added additional breeds to the original purebred Mi-Ki, including the Yorkshire Terrier and the Shih Tzu, among others. Their dogs have not been accepted by the Mi-Ki Club of America as purebred Mi-Kis. The Mi-Ki is not currently recognized by any of the major international kennel clubs.
