Thothica

Thothica is a subscriber-supported "online community environment" oriented towards people interested in, or working in, the arts & sciences.

It is centered around the Sonork IM-based Thothica IM Client, which is the 'portal' to the network. The reason for this, as opposed to using a website-based portal, is that the creators believe this method provides a more convenient and immediate way to access the services and content of the network with a minimum of 'clutter', making participation easier and enhancing the the 'community feeling' that keeps the members not only interested, but involved. It also adds a bit of security, helping to isolate parts of the network and it's services from the internet at large.

In addition to instant messaging capabilities, the Thothica client also enables direct access to conference (multi-user chat) rooms and a variety of services delivered via integrated web applications, such as: discussion forums; access to various web-based tools, information resources, and community-oriented activities.

Thothica (pronounced 'toth-i-ka') derives its name from the ancient Eqyptian god of wisdom Thoth, who was said to have 'designed the heavens and earth' and was 'the author of every work of every area of knowledge, both Human and Divine', in addition to many other functions.

Thothica has only recently entered its pilot test phase, with about 50 users, and so far appears to be steadily growing as members use and appreciate the system and the 'interesting' people to be found there. Many come from so-called 'HiQ societies' [i.e. Prometheus Society, Glia , Mega Society, Ultranet , Cerebrals , etc.], however membership does not have any specific requirements with regards to IQ or any other credentials - all that's needed is an interest in the areas the network is oriented towards and an ability to interact with other people in a mutually respectful manner.

Current members range from writers, musicians, and artists to scientists, technicians, and engineers, with a healthy number of university students majoring in areas such as Computer Science, Mathematics, Philosophy, Business Administration, and Communications rounding out the current member population.
