Thomas Sowell (born 30 July, 1930) is a writer and economist and a prominent conservative[1]. He was born in North Carolina.
Education
Sowell grew up in Harlem and attended Stuyvesant High School in New York City, dropping out at the age of 17 when his family could no longer afford to pay[2]. After serving in Marines, he earned an A.B. in Economics from Harvard College, an A.M. in Economics from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Chicago, known for its Chicago school of economics. Sowell has taught at prominent American universities including Cornell University and UCLA, and since 1980 has been a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution of Stanford University, where he holds the fellowship named after Rose and Milton Friedman. The latter was one of his professors. [3]
Writings
Dr. Sowell is nearly unique in that he is both a popular columnist and a respected academic economist.
Besides scholarly writing, Dr. Sowell has written books, articles and syndicated columns for a general audience, in such publications as Forbes Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, and major newspapers. Sowell primarily writes on economic subjects, in which he generally advocates a laissez-faire free market approach to capitalism. Sowell also writes on racial topics (he is himself African-American), and is a critic of affirmative action,[4],[5] which has made him a controversial figure.
Columns
He has a regular column that appears on the conservative Townhall.com website. Dr. Sowell is a staunch critic of liberal media bias[6],[7],[8],[9],[10]; judicial activism [11],[12],[13],[14]; partial birth abortion[15]; gay marriage[16]; and opposed the removal of Terri Schiavo's feeding tube.[17] Conversely, he defends the internment of Japanese in WW2 and profiling terrorist suspects today;[18] and is a supporter of just war, and includes the war in Iraq as one.[19],[20]
