The Rookie is a 2002 drama film, directed by John Lee Hancock . It is based on the true story of Jim Morris, who had a brief but famous major league baseball career. Morris also has a cameo in the film as an umpire in one of the games.
Plot
When Jimmy Morris (played by Dennis Quaid) injured his shoulder and put an end to his minor league baseball career as a pitcher twelve years ago, he turned to coaching. His current high school team are struggling, and when he attempts to enourage them, they make a deal; if they reach the play offs, he has to try out for the majors.
The team starts to perform well, and they make the play offs, forcing Jimmy to meet his end of the bargain.
