The Legendary Dark Knight Sparda (also called Sparda) awoke to justice one day and defeated the Darkness Mundus, two millennia ago while wielding the sword with the same name as his. The following text is a preamble taken from the video game Devil May Cry:
"Two millenniums ago, there was a war, between the human world, and the other: the Underworld. But somebody from the Underworld, woke up to justice, and stood up against this legion, alone. His name, was Sparda. Later, he quietly reigned the human world, and continued to preserve harmony, until his death. He became a legend; The Legendary Dark Knight, Sparda."
He is the Father of Dante and Vergil. In Devil May Cry there was a second character you could access by beating the game on hard mode who was called the Legendary Dark Knight. A popular belief has it that he is Sparda, added as an extra bonus to the game. But it has been argued a lot by Devil May Cry fans that he is an older version of Dante (no one knows for sure, since Capcom hasn't gone on record about this confusing matter, but the closest proof confirming that he is Sparda is from a strategy guide from Brady Games ). He has the Yamato and Luce & Ombra as the Legendary Dark Knight wielded once upon a time. Those who believe that he is a future version of Dante are under the conception that they were given to him by Sparda himself. The Yamato sword he wields, is the same sword Vergil Sparda uses in Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening.
