Tetuan

Tetuan is a city in northern Morocco. There are 300,000 people living in the main city and 956,000 living in the surrounding suburbs. Its main languages are Arabic (which is the official language), Spanish, and French. Its main religion is Islam but there are minorities of Jews and Christians.

Location

Tetuan is situated in the middle of a belt of orchards that contain orange, almond, pomegranate and cypress trees. The Rif Mountains are nearby, as the city is located in the Martil Valley .

History

The city was founded circa 1305 by the Merinid Abu Tabit . It served as a base for operations against Sebta and it later became a base for pirates. The Spanish destroyed the town but it was repopulated in the 16th century by Muslims and Jews who were expelled from Andalusia. It prospered under Moulay Ismail.
