Talkeetna is a census-designated place located in Matanuska-Susitna Borough, Alaska. As of the 2000 census, the population of the CDP is 772.

Geography

Talkeetna is located at 62°18'41" North, 150°5'13" West (62.311397, -150.087053).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 111.2 km² (42.9 mi²). 107.7 km² (41.6 mi²) of it is land and 3.5 km² (1.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.19% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 772 people, 358 households, and 181 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 7.2/km² (18.6/mi²). There are 528 housing units at an average density of 4.9/km² (12.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 87.95% White, 0.00% Black or African American, 3.76% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.30% from other races, and 6.87% from two or more races. 1.04% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 358 households out of which 28.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.0% are married couples living together, 7.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 49.4% are non-families. 38.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.16 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 23.3% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 35.4% from 25 to 44, 29.4% from 45 to 64, and 6.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 113.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 114.5 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $38,289, and the median income for a family is $46,818. Males have a median income of $34,732 versus $26,250 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $23,695. 10.8% of the population and 7.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.8% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
