Tai Wai

Tai Wai (大圍) is a small town in Hong Kong, located between Sha Tin and the Lion Rock. Administratively, it is part of Sha Tin District.

History

In earlier times, it functioned as an industrial park, with some factory buildings still surviving, but largely unused. The Tai Wai village, where the name of the area came from, was a walled village.

Features

Currently, Tai Wai consists largely of public housing, so well as privately-owned apartment blocks, very few of which fall into a high-price bracket. While not directly poverty-struck, Tai Wai is composed largely of low-income households.

Additionally, Che Kung Temple , to which hundreds of thousands flock each Chinese New Year, lies within the boundaries of Tai Wai.

Transportation

The Tai Wai KCR station has been expanded on December 21, 2004, to act as the interchange between the East Rail and Ma On Shan Rail.
