Super Mario Land

Title screen
Title screen

Super Mario Land is Mario's first video game adventure for Game Boy. In this game Mario has to save Princess Daisy from Tatanga the Mysterious Spaceman. This game was made in 1989.

The music was composed by Hirokazu 'Hip' Tanaka.

Unlike all previous "Mario" games, Super Mario Land was not created by Shigeru Miyamoto. As a result, almost all of the characters, settings, and items introduced in this game have not reappeared in any subsequent games. Though a popular seller, the game is now generally regarded by many as being inferior to most other side-scrolling Mario games.

One of the most serious flaws in many people's eyes is that there is no way to save the game during gameplay. If the game runs out of power in the middle of the game, the player must restart from the beginning. Also, many believe that a lack of the ability to save the high score to the cartridge hinders the title even more.

Worlds

There are four worlds with three levels in each world. Also, each world is themed in a different way:

  • World 1: Burabuto (Egyptian-style, with pyramids in the background)
  • World 2: Muda (Ocean-style, including a submarine level)
  • World 3: Easton (Easter Island-style, with moai in the background)
  • World 4: Chai (Asian-style, with bamboo in the background, Asian music, and one airplane level)

Each world is in one big world called Sarasaland.

Hard Mode/Warp

After the game is completed, the game returns to the main page. However, the mushroom cursor next to "start" changes to an image of Mario's head, meaning that the player now can play in "Hard Mode". This is a harder version of the game which has a number of changes examples of which are, more monsters in certain levels (Some even in levels that they weren't previously in) and more falling ceilings and stalactites in the indoor levels.

The idea of hard mode is similar to what happened in Super Mario Bros. for the NES. If the hard mode is completed, players are able to then select the level that you play next. However few have reached this far, due to the amount of time to reach the level select and the lack of any battery backed up-saves.

Super Mario Land was followed by Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins.
