Soldat is a shareware 2D multiplayer action game for Windows by Michal Marcinkowski, released in Summer 2002.
The game features realistic physics and a range of weaponry, based on real-world equipment. Players may only carry two weapons at a time, but ammunition is unlimited. (Except for grenades.) In a typical game, players respawn continuously once killed, and jet boots are automatically provided to allow players to temporarily take to the air.
The current version of Soldat is 1.2.1. Registration allows additional customisation of the player avatar, but is not required to play the game. There are about 250 servers permanently online. The number of players has not been counted but the official Soldat Forums have about 6000 registered members. Map editors are also available.
Game Modes
Deathmatch / Team deathmatch
The normal deathmatch mode, as seen in many other games. Several players or teams fight against each other for kills. The first player/team to reach the kill limit wins.
Capture the flag
Two teams each hold a flag, and must capture the other team's flag while protecting their own. Once a player has managed to steal the enemy's flag, he must touch his own team's flag at his home base, in order to score. This mode is is usually played in teams of 3 or more, and so requires additional team tactics is required.
Infiltration
One team holds a flag, whilst the other must steal it and return it to their base. The difference with CTF is that the blue team is restricted to defending only, and they normally also have an advantageous spawnpoint. If the red team manages to steal the flag and score, they receive 30 points. But when the red team does not have the flag (called "objective" in this mode), the blue team receives one point every 3 seconds. The first team to reach the point limit wins.
Rambo/Flag Match
Similar to deathmatch, only either a Rambo bow or a Yellow flag appears at certain points on the map. The player holding it either receives 2 points for each kill (flag match) or healing abilities and a very powerful weapon (Rambo).
Special modifiers
As well as automatic bots, options may be added to alter the gameplay of a Soldat round.
- Survival mode = Last one standing, killed players do not respawn until only one player is left. This mimics the respawn process in Counterstrike.
- Realistic mode = Players have a limited line of sight, and only see other players when they are in it. Additionally, weapons have recoil, and players die faster and receive fall damage.
- Advance mode = Players start with secondary weapons only. Additional weapons become available as the player's kill/death ratio increases.
Bonuses
Players may pick up special bonuses during the course of a game, which imbues his characters with additional abilities.
- Bulletproof Vest = A player who collects a vest will survive more shots.
- Berserk mode = If a player collects a berserk mode crate, his weapon will do double damage for a limited period of time.
- Predator mode = A player collecting a predator crate will be invisible for some time. If he is heavily injured or starts flying, the blood stains or the smoke from his jetboots will be visible.
- Flame god = A player who has collected a flamer crate carries a powerful flamethrower for some time, instead of his normal weapons.
- Cluster grenades = When a player has collected cluster grenades, his normal grenades get replaced with cluster grenades (on contact they explode into damaging clusters of submunitions).
