Siegerland

The Siegerland is a geological area of the Schiefergebirges . It covers the old district of Siegen and the eastern cities and municipalities of the district of Altenkirchen.

The region around the cities of Siegen is one of the most populated areas of Germany. It includes the municipalities of Hilchenbach , Netphen , Kreuztal , Freudenberg , Siegen, Wilnsdorf , Burbach , Neunkirchen , Kirchen , Herdorf , Daaden und Betzdorf . The population is approximately 300,000 inhabitants. Iron mining began in Siegerland in 600 BC and continued until 1965. Wood is also produced in the Hauberg area, mainly for charcoal. The iron mining ended with the closing of Grube Georg in Willroth on March 29, 1965, ending over 2,500 years of mining in Siegerland.
