Shimabara, Nagasaki

Shimabara (島原市; -shi) is a city located in Nagasaki, Japan. The most popular tourist destination in Shimabara is the Shimabara Castle and the nearby Samurai street, but Shimabara is also blessed with many onsen. There is so much natural spring water, both hot and cold, that it runs through the streets. One picturesque spot, the Carp Street, has colorful koi carps swimming in the canals.

As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 39,138 and the density of 660.78 persons per km². The total area is 59.23 km².

The Shimabara Rebellion took place here in 1637.

The city was founded on April 1, 1940.
