Shibetsu, Hokkaido (Nemuro)

Shibetsu (標津町, -chō) is a town located in Shibetsu District, Nemuro Subprefecture, Hokkaido Prefecture. As of December 31, 2004 it has an estimated population of 6,239 and an area of 624.46 km².

History

• 1901 - Uembetsu village (now Rausu town) splits off
• 1923 - Shibetsu village becomes second-class municipality
• 1946 - Nakashibetsu village splits off
• 1958 - Shibetsu village becomes Shibetsu town
