Selby is a local government district in North Yorkshire, England. The local authority, Selby District Council, is based in the town of Selby and provides services to an area which includes Tadcaster and a host of villages.

Since the City of York was removed from North Yorkshire, Selby has been rather isolated from the rest of the county. It is expected that if a regional assembly for Yorkshire and the Humber is introduced and North Yorkshire County Council abolished, then Selby will be annexed to the East Riding of Yorkshire.

The district was formed on April 1, 1974 by the merger of Selby Urban District and parts of Derwent Rural District , Hemsworth Rural District , Osgoldcross Rural District and Tadcaster Rural District .

Selby is home to Selby Abbey, over 1000 years old and the centerpiece to this bustling market town. Selby Abbey is believed to hold the inspiration for the flag of the USA with the Washington Window. See http://www.selbynet.co.uk/abbey/
