Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions

The Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions was a UK Cabinet position created in 1997, with responsibility for the Department for Environment, Transport and the Regions. The position (and department) were created for John Prescott.

It was a merger of the positions of Secretary of State for Environment, the Secretary of State for Transport and some other functions. In 2001 the Transport, Local Government and the Regions functions became a full Secretary of State again, the Environment functions spun out into the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs . Some residual functions have been left with the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. In 2002 Local Government and the Regions were separated from Transport and added to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.
