Salzkammergut

Salzkammergut is a resort area east of Salzburg, Austria, spanning the states of Upper Austria, Salzburg, and Styria. It was known originally for its salt mines.

The name means "possession of the salt chamber" - it originally belonged to the imperial salt chamber, the authority charged with running the precious salt mines in the Habsburg empire.

It is home to lakes such as Attersee, Mondsee, Traunsee and Wolfgangsee and mountains such as the 3000-meter glacier-covered Mount Dachstein , part of the Dachstein limestone massif. Towns in the area include Bad Ischl (Emperor Franz Joseph's summer residence), Hallstatt, St. Wolfgang (location of the White Horse Inn), Gmunden, Bad Aussee and Altaussee .
