Saint-Raymond, also called Saint-Raymond de Portneuf, is a city located about 50 kilometers north-west of Quebec City. Its population of around 9000 makes it the largest city of the Portneuf Regional County Municipality.
Economy
Saint-Raymond developed mostly around the wood industry. Today, the sawmills and the wood drying, wood treating, plywood, and paper plants still play an essential role in the economy of the region.
History
Four pioneers, Alexis Cayer, Pierre-Ignace Déry, ? Duplain and Pierre Plamondon came from Ancienne-Lorette around 1831 in search of cultivable land. Saint-Raymond became official in 1842.
Territory
Saint-Raymond lost some of its territory when its smaller neighbours Sainte-Christine and Saint-Léonard were created, in 1895 and 1897 respectively. Today Saint-Raymond covers 684km2.
Religion
Like most of rural Quebec, Saint-Raymond has a strong roman catholic background. The religion is still present, especially in the elderly.
