Sabarmati River

Sabarmati river is a river in Western India. It is approximately 371 km in length.

Sabarmati river originates in Aravalli Range mountains in Udaipur district of Rajasthan. In its initial course it is also called as Wakal. Most of the river flows in Gujarat state. It empties in the Gulf of Cambay of Arabian Sea.

Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, the commercial and political capitals of Gujarat were established on the banks of Sabarmati river. The legend is that Sultan Ahmed Shah of Gujarat, resting on the bank of Sabarmati, got inspired with the courage of a rabbit to chase a bully dog to establish Ahmedabad in 1411.

Mahatma Gandhi established during the India's independence struggle established Sabarmati Ashram as his home on the banks of this river.
