Russell Street Bombing

The Russell Street Bombing is the name given to a tragedy that occurred at 1pm on March 27, 1986 when a stolen 1979 Holden Commodore left parked outside the Russell Street Police Headquarters complex in Russell Street , Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, exploded.

The blast killed 21 year old Constable Angela Taylor, the first Australian policewoman to be slain in the line of duty, who died on April 20 from injuries sustained in the blast. A further 22 people were injured. The blast caused massive amounts of damage to the Russell Street Police Headquarters and surrounding buildings, with damage estimated at over a million dollars.

Craig 'Slim' Minogue and Stan Taylor (no relation to the dead policewoman) were found guilty and sentenced for the 1986 bombing. Minogue was sentenced to life with a minimum non-parole period of 28 years and later received a second life sentence for the murder of an prison inmate Alex Tsakmakis, who was beaten with gym weights that had been hidden in a pillow case at Melbourne's Pentridge Prison in 1988.
