Roosevelt Airfield

Roosevelt Airfield was an airfield in Garden City, Nassau County, New York.

It is remembered for being the takeoff point for many flights that were important in the history of aviation.

Charles Lindbergh's famous 1927 first solo transatlantic flight originated at Roosevelt Field. It was also used heavily by other pioneering aviators, including Amelia Earhart and Wiley Post.

In its heyday in the 1930s, it was America’s busiest civilian airfield, but it closed on June 11, 1951.

Manhattan-based real estate company Webb and Knapp gained a controlling interest in the airfield in 1950 and later built light factories on it. Currently its site is occupied by Roosevelt Field Mall and Garden City Plaza .
