Robert B. Sherman)
Robert B. Sherman (born December 19, 1925) and Richard M. Sherman (born June 12, 1928) are Academy Award-winning American songwriters, who specialize in musical film.
From the 1960s the brothers worked primarily with the Walt Disney company on films and television specials. The Parent Trap was their first assignment for Disney. They also topped the US charts in 1961 with "Let's Get it Together". Another big hit for the pairing was the 1964 New York World's Fair song "it's a small world". The song "You're Sixteen" twice made it to the No 1 spot in the USA. Other hits include "Chim Chim Cheree", "A Spoonful of Sugar", "Feed the Birds", "That Darn Cat", "The Monkey's Uncle", "Winnie the Pooh", "The Wonderful Thing About Tiggers", "I Wanna be Like You", "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang", and "A Secret Kingdom."
The Sherman brothers stopped working exclusively for Disney after Walt's death in 1967, and began to produce independent scores. Their film, The Tigger Movie for which they wrote six original songs, broke many records, yielding three top ten awards in video sales. In recent years with Robert's move to London, England, the brothers have been working on the blockbuster stage musical presentations of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang writing many new songs for that production and also on Mary Poppins produced collaboratively by Disney and Cameron Mackintosh. Chitty is the longest running show ever to play the London Palladium and is expected to open in New York in 2005.
For their contribution to the motion picture industry, the Sherman Brothers have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6918 Hollywood Blvd.
