The Richmond Braves are the AAA team of the Atlanta Braves and are part of the International League. Colloquially referred to as the R-Braves, they are based in Richmond, Virginia. They play their home games at a stadium called 'The Diamond'. The Diamond is located on Boulevard and features a sculpture of a gigantic Native American brave on the outside walkway.
In 2004, a project was proposed to build a new stadium for the Braves in the Shockoe Bottom district of downtown Richmond. The Diamond was in disrepair, including the fact that the field would flood after heavy rains due to the ground being clay under the grass. After Tropical Storm Gaston devastated Shockoe Bottom, the proposal lost some popular support but is still being heavily promoted by some city leaders. Richmond Mayor Doug Wilder has criticized the team for disclosing little information about their future.
Titles
The R-Braves have won the Governors' Cup , the championship of the IL, 3 times, and played in the championship game 9 times.
