The Real World/Road Rules Challenge is a spin-off of MTV's two flagship reality series, The Real World and Road Rules. The Challenge pits castmembers from past seasons of the two shows against each other, and has also divided cast members by sexes or into "good" and "evil" teans. The castmembers are divided into two teams and must complete challenges in order to win prizes and advance in the game. Recent seasons have taken a cue from Survivor and adopted the common reality TV system of voting people out of the game.
Beginning with the Battle of the Sexes, MTV added a fantasy challenge game to their website. Players "draft" cast members, a la fantasy baseball and cast members are given points for performing certain tasks, such as cursing or "hooking up."
In 2003, The Gauntlet aired. This brought together 24 cast members. They would all compete in a mission with a "life-saver" up for grabs to the best individual performer. Each team would then select a player from their team to go into the gauntlet elimination challenge. Of note on this show:Sarah of Road Rules won five Gauntlets, After Abram of Road Rules was eliminated, he "shared some time" with teammates Rachel and Veronica in the hot tub, Road Rules won
In 2003-2004, The Inferno aired. This combined twenty cast members. In this challenge, the teams would compete one mission for a team prize. Then, they would nominate two players from the other team to the inferno elimination challenge. Unlike on the Gauntlet, there would be another challenge with a life-shield up for grabs before the inferno. Each team then got to select their own inferno nominee from their team. Of note on this show: Road Rules' Katie went to two infernos and won both, Katie had a huge fight with Veronica, Julie of Real World tried to undo Veronica's harness while they were 150 feet above the ground, Julie challenged Coral of Real World to a wrestling match, The Real World was annihilated, as Road Rules only lost two players, Road Rules won, with the team of Holly, Veronica, Christena, Katie, Timmy, Darrell, Abram, and Kendal, CT used his lifesaver to save his friend David, then sent Shane home in the inferno.
In 2004-2005, Battle of the Sexes 2 aired. The format was extremely simple this time. Before every mission, each team would choose 3 leaders. If the team won, those leaders got to vote off anyone else; if the team lost, one of those leaders would be voted off. No lifeshields. Of note on this show: After being voted off, Ayanna delivered an unintentionally humorous dramatic diatribe. Stephen slapped his teammate Shane and was sent home. The guys won with the team of Theo, Dan, and Eric.
In 2005, the Inferno II is currently airing. This challenge is exactly the same as the first, except this time, the opposing team chooses only one Inferno nominee, who must win the lifeshield to save themselves. This challenge has unique groupings of "Good Guys" and "Bad Asses." Of note this season: On the Bad Asses team, Tonya threw her teammate Beth's clothes into the pool after an argument, Beth left the challenge, and Karamo essentially quit too.
