Province House

Province House is the name for two separate provincial legislature buildings in Canada:

• Province House in Halifax, Nova Scotia houses the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. Opened in 1819, this is currently the oldest seat of government in Canada. In 1852, the building played host to the first responsible government in the British Empire outside the United Kingdom.

• Province House in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island houses the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island. Opened in 1847, this is the second-oldest seat of government in Canada. In 1864, the building played a central role during the Charlottetown Conference where meetings in what is now the led to Canadian Confederation. As a result, the building is also a National Historic Site of Canada and is operated by Parks Canada, while remaining an active legislature.
