Princess Alexandra of Edinburgh

Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra of Edinburgh and Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (September 1, 1878 - April 16, 1942) was a member of the British Royal Family. She was born on in Coburg, Germany.

Her parents were His Royal Highness Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and Grand Duchess Marie Alexandrovna of Russia. Her father was the second eldest son of Victoria of the United Kingdom and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. Her mother was a daughter of Alexander II of Russia and Marie of Hesse and by Rhine.

In 1893, her great-uncle, Ernst II, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (brother of her paternal grandfather) died without heirs. The Prince of Wales had renounced his claim to the ducal throne of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, therefore the vacant duchy fell to Alexandra's father, the Duke of Edinburgh. Thus Princess Alexandra was both a British princess and Princess of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha from birth.

In 1896, Princess Alexandra married His Serene Highness Prince Ernest Hohenlohe-Langenburg . Together they had four children:

  • Prince Godfrey, 8th Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg
  • Princess Marie-Melita of Hohenlohe-Langenburg
  • Princess Alexandra of Hohenlohe-Langenburg
  • Princess Irma of Hohenlohe-Langenburg

Nicknamed, Sandra by her family, Princess Alexandra lived for the rest of her life in Germany. She died in Schwabisch Hall, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany in 1942.
