Prince William Frederick, Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh

His Royal Highness Prince William Frederick, Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh (January 15 1776 - November 30 1834) was a member of the British Royal Family, a great grandson of King George II.

Early Life

Prince William was born on 15 January 1776 in Rome, Italy. His father was the Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh, the third son of the Prince of Wales. His mother was Maria Walpole, Countess of Waldegrave, the illegitimate daughter of Edward Walpole. As a great grandson of King George II he was styled as a Prince of Great Britain with the style His Highness at birth.

On 25 August 1805, Prince William's father died and he inherited the titles Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh and Earl of Connaught.

Marriage

On July 22, 1816 he married The Princess Mary, the fourth daughter of King George III and his cousin once removed. The marriage took place at St James's Palace in London. On that day, the Prince Regent granted the Duke the style of His Royal Highness.

The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and Edinburgh lived at Bagshot Park in Surrey. They had no children together. The Duke died on 30 November 1834. He is buried in St. George's Chapel, Windsor.
