Podunavlje


Podunavlje is a geographical region in Serbia around Danube River. There is Podunavlje District in Central Serbia. Administrative centre of this district is Smederevo.

Podunavlje is also a name of proposed new administrative unit of Serbia.

Some political parties in Serbia (notably Democratic Party of Serbia and Sumadija Coalition ) propose creation of new administrative units of Serbia. According to these proposals, Serbia would be divided into 6 regions: Vojvodina (capital city: Novi Sad), Kosovo (capital city: Pristina), Sumadija (capital city: Kragujevac), Podunavlje (capital city: Nis), Podrinje (capital city: Uzice) and Belgrade City Region.

Historical background

In the second century, Nis (Naissus) was capital city of Mesia Superior, which was province of Roman Empire.

In the 11th century, Duchy of Nis was province of Byzantine Empire.

In 1162, zupan Desa was ruler around Nis.

Between 1791 and 1878, Pasaluk of Nis was province of Ottoman Empire. In 1878, this territory became part of Serbia.

Between 1922 and 1929, Province of Nis (Niska Oblast) was administrative unit of Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes.

Between 1929 and 1941, Moravian Banat (Moravska banovina ) was province of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Capital city of this province was Nis.
