Peter F. Vallone, Sr. is a former Democratic New York City Councilman representing Astoria, Queens, for a time serving as Speaker of the City Council, and was an unsuccessful candidate for for Governor of New York in 1998, and Mayor of New York City in 2001.
He has been succeeded in the City Council by his son, Peter Vallone, Jr. , who in February 2003 introduced a bill into the City Council reviving the idea of New York City secession.
