Nox is a computer game developed by Westwood Studios and was officially released in 2000.
Game description
This game is placed in a magical medieval world, full of monsters, weapons, and nasty surprises. The three classes you can choose to be in this game are Wizard, Conjuror, and Warrior. Nox's overall look and feel are that of the computer game Diablo. However; the multi player gameplay of Nox surpasses any game of its genre. Nox's multi player game play is based on strategy, fierceness, and reflexes. Unlike most role playing games, Nox is almost completely skill based.
The history of Nox multi-player
Nox multi player was not a world for the weak of heart. Online players were brutally merciless, and laughed over the bodies of their opponents after they had killed them. In this game, it was dog eat dog, and only the strong survived.
The founding father of online Nox wizard strategy was a player that went under the online nickname of ZUEL. In the beginning, many of the players could not accept his radical playing style; but after time passed, people gradually began opening their minds to new strategies that may have seemed "cheap" and "lame" at first. Wizards began copying ZUEL's style after they found it could be very effective. Warriors and conjurors weren't as widely controversial as wizards. A good warrior could easily win respect among the ranks, but a good wizard had to earn his respect through honorable playing and a certain level of mercy. The wizards were the most powerful of the classes when used to their full potential, so many tried to tone them down to lessen the damage to the warriors and conjurors. Still today, there are certain wizard spells that are deemed socially unacceptable in the gaming world to use.
Nox was fairly popular online when the game was released. However, as the years ground on, computer hackers became more adept at manipulating Nox (usually with a software application called WinHack). Eventually, a hacker by the name of Burner found a bug in the Nox system that allowed him to change all the settings on the official Westwood Online gaming servers. Burner shared the bug with others, not knowing the catastrophe that would be caused by it. It spread like wildfire until it fell into the wrong hands. After that, all the official Westwood Online game servers were hacked with the bug until nobody could join them any more; sparking the slow death of this computer game. Today, there are no Westwood Online servers, and only user hosted games. Due to lack of Internet bandwidth and the tyranny caused by the hosts of these games, people began quitting Nox.
The future of Nox
Nox is slowly dying. As more and more players quit due to lack of servers to play on, only the loyal and the old stay. Another problem is, the old players are so skilled at the game that the newer players are often discouraged and quit the game soon after they buy it. However; a map editor for Nox has been released. This map editor, although still in beta stages, perhaps will attract new players.
