Edward "Ned" Hanlan, was a 19th Century resident of Toronto, Canada, and professional rower.
Hanlan was born in 1855. Hanlan's father was a hotelkeeper on Toronto Islands, and young Hanlan used to row several kilometers across the harbour, to go to and from school every day. By the time Hanlan was a teenager he was competing in rowing events. During his rowing career Hanlan only lost six of his 300 races.
Hanlan died in 1908.
Weighing less than 155 pounds, Hanlan was called "the boy in blue". Actor Nicholas Cage portrayed Hanlan in the 1986 film The Boy in Blue . A section of the Toronto Islands has been named after Hanlan. Hanlan has been honoured with a postage stamp. Hanlan had a steam tugboat named after him.
