Mission: SPACE

Mission: SPACE is a thrill ride/simulation at the Horizons pavillion of Epcot Center next to Walt Disney World in Florida. Mission: SPACE simulates what an astronaut feels on a mission into space, from the g-forces of take-off to hypersleep.

Construction began on Mission: SPACE after the 1999 closing of "Horizons", a ride on the vision of progress as envisioned in the 1980s. Some argued that "Horizons" was no longer "cutting edge" and seemed more like a 1990s flashback then a picture of what is to come. Imagineers attempted to attract a thrill-seeking audience to Epcot with the demolition of "Horizons" and the subsequent construction of the motion simulator.

Backstory

Like most Disney attractions, Mission: SPACE attempts to immerse visitors deeply in its theme: It pretends to be training for recruits for space travel. After you exit the room, your team of four is given assignments - engineer, commander, pilot, and navigator. Each assignment comes with certain duties such as taking manual control, and activating hypersleep.
