Michel-Jean Cazabon

Michel-Jean Cazabon (b. September 20, 1813, d. November 20, 1888) was a Trinidad painter. He is generally regarded as the first great Trinidadian painter. Cazabon was the son of Francis Cazabon, a mulatto planter from Martinique. He was born on his parents' estate near San Fernando. He was educated at St. Edmund's College in Ware, England, and later in Paris where he went to study medicine but switched to art. In 1850 he returned to Trinidad with his French wife and their daughters. In 1860 the migrated to Martinique, but returned to Trinidad in 1870.

His work was displayed in the Salon de Louvre in Paris in 1839 and 1843-1847.
