In 1978, she was appointed Senator as a Democrat by Governor George Wallace to succeed her late husband, James Allen. She ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination in the election to fill out the rest of the term in 1978, and was defeated by Donald W. Stewart, who went on to win the election.
