Martin O'Malley (politician)

Martin O'Malley (1962 - ) is the current mayor of Baltimore City, Maryland.

He was first elected mayor in 1999, taking over 90% of the vote, and was re-elected in 2004, receiving 87%. Prior to his election as Mayor, O'Malley served on the Baltimore City Council from 1991 to 1999, and as an Assistant State's Attorney for the City of Baltimore from 1988 to 1990. In 2004, O'Malley was one of the featured speakers at the Democratic National Convention in the FleetCenter in Boston, Massachusetts. Although O'Malley declined to seek the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in 2002, many Democrats expect him to seek the party's nomination to challenge Governor Robert Ehrlich's in 2006.

In addition to his political position, Mr. O'Malley is also lead singer and guitarist for the Irish-inspired rock band O'Malley's March. In 2005, Mr. O'Malley announced that he is officially disbanding O'Malley's March to focus on both his day job and on becoming a gubernatorial candidate for the 2006 election.

Fictional Representations

Mr. O'Malley has also made his first foray in acting by having a cameo role as the mayor of Baltimore City in the 2004 film Ladder 49.

The character of Thomas Carcetti on the third season (2004) of the television drama The Wire is based on O'Malley, according to the show's producers. Carcetti is a Democratic Baltimore city councilman with aspirations of becoming the next mayor. It is believed that his election campaign will form a plotline in the upcoming fourth season of the show.
