Martell is a leading manufacturer of Cognac.
The company was founded by Jean Martell in 1715. It was sold in 1988 from the Firino-Martell family to Seagram and again in 2002 to the Pernod-Ricard-Group, which also own the Cognac brands Bisquit & Renault.
The cellar master was up to the 1980ies from the family Chapeau (in a way the cellar masters of Hennessy a from the family Fillioux)
Martell attaches importance to produce pure, soft, neutral Cognacs, thus does not destill lees in the wine.
Preferred are casks made from Troncais-oak, which is darker, with narrow pores, with less tannin and more lignin, than Limousin-oak, resulting in less wooddenly aromas in the Cognac.
Much part of Martell Cognac is produced of wine from the Borderies region, in difference to the other big good companies, which manly sell Fine Champagne Cognac. Borderies Cognac normally taste are bit more nuttily.
