Clavier à lumières

(Redirected from Light organ)

The clavier a lumieres was a musical instrument invented by Scriabin for use in his work Prometheus: Poem of Fire. However, it was never built in his lifetime. The instrument was supposed to be a keyboard, with notes corresponding to colors as given by Scriabin's synesthetic system. Scriabin assigned the following colors to the following notes:

Note Color
C red
C# violet or purple
D yellow
D# gray
E sky blue
F deep red
F# bright blue
G orange
G# lilac
A green
A# gray
B light blue

However, when the notes are ordered by the circle of fifths, the colors are in order of a spectrum, indicating that he did not experience the physiological condition of synaesthesia, and that it was a thought out system that was influenced by his theosophic readings and based on Sir Isaac Newton's Optics:

Color Note
red C
orange G
yellow D
green A
sky blue E
light blue B
bright blue F#
violet or purple C#
lilac G#
gray D#
gray A#
deep red F
