Laurier—Sainte-Marie

Laurier—Sainte-Marie is the name of a federal electoral district in Quebec, Canada. Its population is 100,488. (2001)

Geography

The district includes Saint-Denis and Saint-Jean-Baptiste and the eastern parts of Saint-Louis and Mile End in the Plateau Mont-Royal borough and the eastern part of Saint-Jacques and the western part of Sainte-Marie in the Ville-Marie borough in the City of Montreal.

History

The electoral district of Laurier was created in 1933 from Laurier—Outremont and Saint-Denis. In 1987, the district of Laurier—Sainte-Marie was created from Laurier, Sainte-Marie and Saint-Jacques. In 2003, the name was changed to Laurier and then back to Laurier—Sainte-Marie in 2004. The name comes from a street in Plateau Mont-Royal named after Wilfrid Laurier.
