A distinctive "pagoda" style kiln chimney at Laphroig
Laphroaig (pronounced 'la-froyg') is a Single malt Scotch whisky distillery situated on the island of Islay off the West coast of Scotland. Laphroaig is produced by Diageo plc.
The distillery was established in 1815 and produces a single malt. It is considered one of the strongest flavored of all scotch whiskies, and is generally aged to 10 years, although the 15 year old variety is not uncommon. The name means "the beautiful hollow by the broad bay". A drop of water enhances the peaty aroma of this whisky.
One benefit of buying a bottle of Laphroaig is that you are granted a lifetime lease of one square foot of land on the island of Islay. The annual rent is a dram of Laphroaig which can be obtained upon visiting the distillery.
Tasting notes
Laphroaig is an acquired taste, even among whisky drinkers. Its strong phenolic and peaty overtones have been likened to "bottled smoke", seaweed or even TCP . However, those who like it are likely to consider it to be a favourite.
