Josif Rajacic (1785–1861) was chosen for a metropolitan of Sremski Karlovci and in 1848 he became Serbian Patriarch. That signified the victory of feudal elements in Serbian Vojvodina. He used his positions, and the relationship among Serbs to revert gradually the character of loyalty into the counerrevolucionary character of Serbian rebellion and he used them for turning this rebellion into the action for saving Viennese royalty. He opened several Serbian schools and founded a patriarchal library and a printing-house.
