Johnny Sokko And His Flying Robot was a live action television series from Japan made in the 1960s.
It featured Johnny Sokko, a young Japanese boy, who inadvertently gains the control of a giant flying robot. He then decides to join the secret Unicorn police and fight the evil forces of Emperor Guillotine, an evil alien from the planet Gargoyle.
The series was originally created by Mitsuteru Yokoyama (June 18, 1935 - April 15, 2004). Yokoyama was not only the creator of Giant Robot, but also Tetsujin 28-go (Ironman 28) or better known in the USA as Gigantor.
Originally a manga, the Giant Robo comic spawned the 1960's live-action series, and in the 1990's was transformed again into the Giant Robo anime.
The 26 episode series was first broadcast in the United States in 1969 and became quite popular in the next few years. Later several episodes were edited together to create the movie Voyage Into Space which has now reached cult film status.
The 26 episode series and the movie have never been officially released in the United States, with the exception of the first eight episodes, which were released on videocassette by Orion Home Video.
