John William Patrick Smith (born March 7, 1951) is Labour MP for the Vale of Glamorgan. Born in Penarth, Smith attended Penarth County Grammar School and then served for a while in the Royal Airforce. Smith is a former member of the Revolutionary Socialist League, also known as the Militant Tendency, although he never appeared publicly in this role. He was first elected to the seat in a 1989 by-election, lost it to the Conservatives in 1992 by a very narrow margin due to postal votes cast by expatriates, and regained the seat in the general elections of 1997.
