Johann David Heinichen (1683 - July 16, 1729) was a Baroque composer and theorist active in Dresden at the court of Augustus the Strong.
A pupil of Johann Kuhnau, Heinichen studied law at the University of Leipzig, then went on to Italy. In 1710, he published the first edition of his major treatise on the thoroughbass. In 1717, he became a colleague of Johann Sebastian Bach at the court of Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Cöthen , then went on to be Kappellmeister to the Elector of Saxony. His pupils included Johann Georg Pisendel.
